Can Arthritis Be Cured?

It usually starts with aching joints.

“My knees hurt when I get out of the car after a long drive.”

“My shoulders and elbows ache when I put the grocery bags in the trunk.”

“My hands hurt when I make my juice in the morning and I’m really stiff when I get out of bed”

These insidious clues to a progressing arthritic condition aren’t usually cause for alarm, but the disease is progressive and as more joints become affected or pain and stiffness worsen, the search for solutions leads to medical diagnosis, and while arthritis is thought of as both commonly manageable, conventional medicine, including docs at Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic will perpetuate the belief that the condition isn’t curable.

That doesn’t mean the prognosis is dismal.  It just means their approach is to manage the condition using means such as medications, therapies, and treatments that may mitigate pain and control the progression of inflammation.

I’m not challenging this position outright, but I am asking you to reconsider your perception of the word “cure.” 

 


 

 CURE

 According to Webster, “cure” means “restore to health.”

 In order to summarily describe the effect of arthritis, let’s hyphenate the word “disease.”

“Dis-ease” = “movement  away from ease”

 


 

Theoretically, if we can restore ease to an individual who suffers with an inflammatory and/or degenerative condition, if we can alleviate the associated pain and eliminate inflammation and symptoms, haven’t we “restored the individual to health?”

So rather than starting with the belief “I have a condition for which there is no cure,” let’s simply figure out how you can alleviate pain, eliminate inflammation, and reverse the symptoms.

I can’t promise the process of theoretical “cure” is easy BUT I CAN PROMISE WE'VE "CRACKED THE  CODE."

Because the disease is progressive much depends upon the point at which you begin combining the natural strategies aimed at optimizing health (brain, immune system, gut health), reversing inflammation, and halting or reversing the degeneration, but starting with a sense of your own power to find betterment is a vital prerequisite.

Let’s start with clarity as to what will and won’t restore health and recover some level of physical integrity.

 


 

  • OTC Pain Relievers WON’T do it.

Over The Counter Pain Relievers (NSAIDS) and Analgesics may inhibit the pain signal creating some level of relief, but they will not contribute to “cure” in any way.

 

  • Losing weight is not “the fix.”

Weight loss might ease some of the pain, will not cure.

 

  • Prescription meds are not “the curative panacea,” not by a long shot.

Prescription meds may in some cases alleviate symptoms, reduce the inflammatory response, and slow the progression, but not without risk and not without side effects.  Methotrexate is one we commonly see prescribed for people suffering arthritic pain and inflammation.  It falls into a category referred to as DMAARDs (Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs), a type of immunosupressant.  Possible side effects run the gamut from chills and nausea to susceptibility to pathogens, viruses, and bacterial infections.

 


 

GIVEN THE RIGHT TOOLS, YOUR BODY CAN HEAL

The strategy aimed at reversal and elimination of the dis-ease begins with a restoration of the divine healing power you took for granted when you were younger, and that comes down to a multi-faceted strategy including restoration of optimal brain health.

Yes, brain health.  I’ll explain further in a moment, but first, let’s understand the varied conditions that bear the moniker “arthritis.”  There are three types or categories and while their discernible symptomology is quite  similar, they’re different in source and pathology.

 

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease in which immune-stimulated biochemicals and cytokines attack the body’s own tissue, beginning with joint structures and connective tissue.  The tissue swells causing pain and movement compromise.  Because it’s systemic, as it progresses it may affect multiple joints and in severe cases may further affect organ tissue.

Osteoarthritis is a gradual wearing away of connective tissue, cartilage, and the underlying bone.  It is degenerative and progressive.  There may be a genetic predisposition to experience onset of the condition toward middle age, but the likelihood of symptomology is elevated when there is long-term overuse (i.e. a pitcher’s shoulder, a powerlifter’s knee), history of injury, impaired movement patterns, or significant weight gain.

Finally, Psoriatic Arthritis is inflammation and swelling of joint and connective tissue associated with a chronic skin condition (psoriasis).  Psoriasis usually presents as a scaly skin eruption or rash.  About 30% of individuals diagnosed with psoriasis also develop the associated condition which makes it a co-morbidity.  Ultimately, this  too is an inflammatory condition similar (as in its systemic nature) to RA.

 

Most of the information I’ll share from this point forward will be specific to RA, but the great majority of it will apply to all three categories.

 


 

THE BRAIN

While the primary symptoms of “the dis-ease” are most prevalent and apparent in the actual joint(s), research clearly demonstrates a significant link between progressive rheumatoid arthritis and neurodegenerative disease.  Comorbid, simultaneous or pre-existing pathology of the central nervous system is common in men and women suffering with RA. 

That means, if we’re going to attempt “cure” (restoration of health), we don’t want to focus only on the inflamed joint(s).  We don’t want to neglect the brain.

From a published review of studies on the subject, peer-reviewed and published in Frontiers in Immunology, December, 2020, Studies investigating the central nervous system (CNS) in preclinical models of RA have leveraged the understanding of the intimate crosstalk between peripheral and central immune responses.”

By recognizing our neuroplastic ability, and integrating simple exercises in mindset, and gratitude with cellular detoxification, targeted nutrition and supplementation, and physical exercises requiring balance and coordination, positive changes in the brain-immune crosstalk can be dramatic.

Beyond incorporating “brain betterment,” we have to address the immune system. 

 

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

A comprehensive program aimed at “the reversal of arthritic dis-ease” we’ll want to restore immune intelligence, to halt the rogue immune response that’s sending cytokines to inflame and attack joints and connective tissue.  When we quiet the cytokine attack, we can begin to rapidly and significantly reverse the inflammation.

And if we continue working our way upstream, from inflamed joint to immune response, continuing to ask the question, “and what’s causing that?” we get to the source. 

The little-known reality is, at the source of the corrupted immune response are microbes.  Gut bacteria.

CAN "IT" REALLY BE CURED?

“Curing” arthritis by integrating exercise, supportive eating, supplementation, mindset, and more??!??!

It sounds like too much work.  Even worse, it sounds a bit cuckoo.  “Healing my aching hips and knees is going to be achieved by focusing on my gut?”

In further addressing the importance of involving the digestive system, let’s break it down to one question.

 

“Will “healing” the gut and restoring the microbiome help reduce and reverse my arthritic symptoms?”

 

The question is a good one. 

The answer is even better.

The answer is yes!

 

Can I prove it? 

Yes. 

 

I can prove it anecdotally by reviewing our “symptoms checklist” comparisons in arthritic clients who went through 8-week programs, or I can refer you to the extensive body of evidence that contributed to the strategies we use for “healing” and “restoring" gut health.

Here’s a single quote from an extensive review of available references interweaving microbial activity in the gut and effective RA therapies.

MANY WILL BE RESISTANT TO THE STRATEGIES OF "CURE"

When arthritis strikes, the symptom that prompts action is Pain. 

When pain becomes a nagging reality, the wish for the pain to stop can prompt impulsive decisions. 

It doesn’t seem that far of a stretch to jump from NSAIDs like Aleve, to prescription pain alleviators, from Advil to cortisone, and from short term pain relief to immunosuppressants. 

In the throes of pain, a discussion suggesting an 8-week program that requires willpower, stick-to-it-iveness, and a re-education in what you eat and what you do is anything but compelling.

Just know, the path of seeking “relief” without “reversal,” or what I earlier referred to as “cure” is a slippery slope with a whole lot of pitfalls.

 

THE ACT OF COMMITTING IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARD DIS-EASE REVERSAL

My intention with this article is not to pretend “the answer” is simple. 

It isn’t, but neither is the state of dis-ease.

TOPIC: EXERCISE FOR ARTHRITIS

 

QUESTION: How can I perform vigorous exercise if I'm in pain?

 

ANSWER: The exercise routine will prove to be both appropriate and do-able. 

The program begins with a 9-minute routine that is fully customizable.  If you join us for our Reboot program, you’ll be coached and guided by one of our Health Optimization and Performance Coaches.  The range of motion, resistance, intensity, and level of challenge will be governed by your own capacity and capability and the routine  will gradually progress in a way that proves fully therapeutic.

You'll learn to use tools such as stability balls and exercise bands to exercise the body with respect both for its divine architecture and you current condition.

Within a matter of days you'll notice greater fluidity, greater confidence, and you'll realize "you can" in areas so many with arthritis have given up both hope and belief.

Before we move on to the questions related to Nutrition and Supplementation, let's get to a common question that begs to be answered.

 

 

QUESTION: Will I lose weight on your program?

ANSWER:  If you have excess bodyfat, less than ideal body composition, or a body that could use a bit of tightening and toning, fat loss and body contouring will be a welcome side effect or our treatment plan.  Along with re-activating positive metabolic processes (in line with what I referred to as your body's innate healing power), the "plan" will prompt mobilization of adipose material (fat release) and enhanced thermogenesis which boosts your body's "desire" to burn fat as fuel.

Not only do people see fat reduction when they follow our multi-faceted program, but for those who begin carrying excess, the reduction in weight significantly alleviates the strain placed upon arthritic joints and inflamed tissue.

TOPIC: NUTRITION FOR ARTHRITIS

QUESTION: Will I have to go on an extreme diet or completely change the way I eat?

ANSWER: The nutrition plan is extensive, generous, and provides far more real-world food options than you expect.  It doesn’t focus on deprivation, but rather on replacing any inflammatory foods (processed grains, sugars, fast foods) with natural anti-inflammatory alternatives.  Here’s a very abbreviated list of foods that provide anti-inflammatory compounds:

  • Fresh Wild-Caught High-Fat Fish
  • Grass-Fed Dairy Products
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Green Tea
  • Coconut Oil
  • Avocado
  • Garlic and Onions
  • Richly Colored Vegetables
  • Dark colored Berries and Cherries
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Broccoli
  • Dark Green Leafy Vegetables (Spinach, Kale)
  • Almonds and Walnuts

 

QUESTION: Is that a complete list of foods I can eat?

ANSWER: No!  Not even close.  It’s a list of commonly available foods you can find in any grocery store  or natural market that have anti-inflammatory properties and serve as a foundation of a “overcome arthritis” plan.  Beyond all of the natural food items that can make up your meals, integrating “Functional Smoothies” into your Nutrition Plan adds a phenomenal boost.

 

A BIT ABOUT ANTI-INFLAMMATORY SMOOTHIES

Smoothies have become popular.  So much so that gyms, health clubs, natural markets, and mall food courts often feature “smoothie bars.”  Commercially sold smoothies are usually high in sugar (although it may be referred to as turbinado) and are not ideal for anyone with an inflammatory condition.

That said, the concept of a smoothie is a really good one, especially for treating inflammatory concerns.  You can consolidate a whole lot of nutrients into a simple to consume liquid “meal” and all you need are some natural anti-inflammatory foods and a good blender.

If we refer to the food list above, it isn’t necessarily conducive to blended taste sensations (salmon and garlic smoothie?  No thank you), but there are some phenomenal blender-friendly foods that contain phytochemicals and carotenoids with anti-inflammatory properties.  Here are a few:

  • Coconut milk
  • Pineapple
  • Mango
  • Blueberries
  • Dark Red Cherries
  • Baby Spinach
  • Ginger Root
  • Turmeric (powder or ground root)
  • Parsley
  • Cinnamon

 

 

 

QUESTION: What  about the supplements? 

Must I buy expensive combinations of nutrients and swallow handfuls of pills?

 

ANSWER: While supplements are not “a need,” adding the right ones to your plan can speed and optimize the path toward relief and reversal.  While many functional medicine practitioners suggest dozens of supplements, the cost is rarely justifiable and compliance is usually challenging (pill fatigue sets in). 

In addition to those that are pretty close to staples for those seeking restoration of immune and gut health (prebiotics, probiotics, antioxidants, and natural anti-inflammatories) there are a few novel supplements that have shown remarkable benefit both in clinical research and in the lives of our clients fighting inflammation.  I’ll list a few here.

 

Turmeric (curcumin)

You recognize this as a commonly used spice.  It is.  It’s also an age-old remedy used in Eastern Cultures and Ayurvedic Medicine for millennia.  More recently it’s been the subject of hundreds of studies due to its extreme anti-inflammatory properties (with no downside). 

Because over the counter pain relievers (NSAIDs and analgesics) are commonly recommended for arthritis pain, becoming familiar with the properties of Turmeric (and the curcumin it contains) can offer equal or greater benefit without risk.

In a 2016 study serving as a Meta-Analysis of international research, the authors stated, “The studies provide sufficient evidence to support large clinical trials leading to the acceptance of turmeric (curcumin) as a standard therapy for arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.  One study demonstrated that 8–12 weeks of standardized turmeric extracts (typically 1000 mg/day of curcumin) treatment can reduce arthritis symptoms (pain and inflammation-related symptoms) at least as well as NSAIDs and medical analgesics without risk of gastric or digestive system side effects.”

The December 2021 issue of the Harvard Health Newsletter reported the following in reviewing a study published in the British Medical Journal comparing turmeric to commonly used NSAIDs and analgesics:

  • Both treatments relieved arthritis symptoms with nearly 95% of participants reporting at least 50% improvement in symptoms.

  • 28% of the subjects taking the NSAIDs needed treatment for stomach trouble, none of the subjects taking curcumin reported any stomach concerns.

 

C60

This remarkable carbon compound literally doubled the lifespan of subjects in animal studies.  It has a great many therapeutic properties, many of them contributing to its anti-inflammatory value.  You can read a bit more about C60 (and Turmeric) in another article I wrote on the subject (link below). 

C60 has been proven to be a superior antioxidant.  It is a fullerene, molecularly a hollow cage-like structure with 60 carbon atoms (Carbon-60) bound together resembling a molecular soccer ball.  Scientific studies have demonstrated the ability of C60 to mitigate the adverse effects of the aging process by counteracting the destructive activities of free radicals.  Free radicals, otherwise referred to as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are highly elevated in joint (synovial) fluid during the chronic and progressive phases of RA.  This results in cell and tissue damage.  Scavenging free radicals can be a vital benefit to those looking to slow or prevent tissue degeneration.

While research on C60’s role in disease mitigation  and reversal continues, a study as early as 2009 demonstrated its ability to inhibit arthritis and limit its progression.  Here’s a quote, “‘Our in vitro studies indicate that water-soluble C60 inhibits the following arthritis-related responses: the production of the proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-1β from synovial fibroblasts, synovial infiltrating lymphocytes and macrophages.

Oral Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid (ha) is a naturally occurring joint lubricant.  It’s a gel-like substance that keeps joints mobile and skin supple.  Over time, as many compounds, our capacity to product HA diminishes and that reduction may contribute to the stiffness associated with aging, especially in cases of arthritis.  Exogenous HA is often used as a cosmetic skin treatment via subcutaneous injection, and in cases of osteoarthritis, similar injections (different needle), most commonly used in the knee joint, can help with greater mobility. 

Because injections have a limited half-life, even with modifications to molecular structure, the benefits of HA injections may last not more than a matter of months.  That leads to questions of easier application and lasting benefit, something researchers suspected might be the result of oral ingestion.

Good news.  The research is promising.

“HA is a safe raw material and the efficacy of oral HA in relieving knee pain was demonstrated in several clinical trials. HA as a dietary supplement exhibits efficacy and no side effects.”

Is it a miracle worker?  No, but taken in concert with Turmeric and C60 it can play a role in alleviating pain, slowing degeneration, and perhaps even slowing or preventing progression of RA and its symptoms.  Add in exercise, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and added focus on Brain, Immune System, and Gut and it’s worth consideration.

 

QUESTION: Are there any other nutrition or supplemental “home remedies” that might work better than Over The Counter products?

 

ANSWER:  Yes. Golden Milk. 

It’s an ancient remedy, an Ayurvedic tonic used in India for thousands of years to treat colds, illness, and inflammation.  By creating a turmeric paste (with a bit of black pepper to enhance bioavailability) and boiling it in white milk (almond milk) with an added spoonful of coconut oil, you create a super powerful concoction for mitigating inflammatory symptoms.  You drink it warm, as you’d drink tea or coffee.  It has a unique consistency, an unusual taste, and may take some getting used to, but after a week or two my clients fall in love.  With Golden Milk that is.

Originally known as Haldi Ka Doodh, today you’ll find some version of it sold as “Turmeric Latte” in New York and Beverly Hills cafes.  For you, it’s a delivery system for two incredible anti-inflammatory compounds, turmeric (which we’ve already discussed) and coconut oil.

Wait a minute Phil.  I thought this was science based.  You’re now incorporating “ancient remedies?”

Those who concocted the original Haldi Ka Doodh were on to something, something evidenced and verified by 21st century science.  Just as a body of evidence supports the anti-inflammatory power of turmeric, the science is solid on coconut oil’s role as another incredible anti-inflammatory available from nature, available in the grocery store.

“In acute inflammatory models, Coconut Oil showed significant  and demonstrable effects in the inhibition of chronic inflammation.  Its inhibitory effect included a reduction in transudative weight, granuloma formation, and serum alkaline phosphatase activity.”

TOPIC: PEPTIDES

 

QUESTION: You mentioned Peptides in your list of elements in the program.  Are there specific peptides I should consider?

 

ANSWER: Specific peptides, such as BPC-157 (Pentadecapeptide Body Protective Compound 157) and TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4), have displayed great promise both for athletes seeking recovery and for those suffering inflammatory symptoms affecting skeletal muscle.  They are, therefore, often offered together by practitioners incorporating peptide therapies in their respective wheelhouses. 

Before you jump to inject both compounds, know that the research is not conclusive and my advice would be to hold off on considering TB-500 to treat or mitigate any arthritic condition.  Allow the science to unfold.  While athletes can find benefit in muscle recovery with TB-500, the inflammatory progression and tissue erosion present in arthritic patients may be amplified when TB-500 is injected.  This one is a “wait and see.”

BPC-157, on the other hand, is a native gastric peptide with regenerative properties that is successfully used to relieve multiple types of joint pain.  In injectable form, it has been adequately tested and repeatedly demonstrated the ability to repair tears, build cartilage and reduce the likelihood of a recommendation for knee surgery.

A 2021 study compared two groups of participants with knee pain, one given BPC-157, the other a combination of BPC-157 and TB-500.  The outcomes were better with BPC alone.

Keep in mind, this, as most of the revelations in this article, is not intended to alleviate pain in the short term (as corticosteroid injections) but rather to assist in both healing and pain relief (dis-ease reversal) far into the future.

 

TOPIC: BIOHACKING

 

QUESTION: I know you own and operate facilities that use Biohacking Modalities such as Red Light Therapy.  Do these have a place in treating and reversing arthritic conditions?

 

ANSWER: Yes.  This topic merits an article in and of itself, and I’ve written many related to the benefits of Red Light, Cryotherapy, and PEMF.  At Infinite Impact we have a myriad of advanced therapies that fall into the category commonly referred to as Biohacks

In a recent seminar I defined “Biohacking” as follows:

 

A Means of Harnessing Natural Forces
To Achieve Advantageous Biological Shifts  
(Desired Improvement)
Other Than The Means That Are
Ordinarily Found in Nature

 

To clarify, using red light as an example, we can get the benefits of full spectrum red light (including infrared) if we stand naked with full exposure during sunrise.  That would be the “means” found in nature.  Our “Red Light Beds” and “Red Light Systems” deliver that same spectrum of light indoors in a safe and controlled environment, thus, it’s a “bio-hack.”

Oxygen is available to all of us all of the time, but sedentary lifestyles and inactivity tend to create shallow breathing patterns and less-than-optimal levels of cellular oxygen.

As another example, if you stand barefoot on natural ground, whether you stand on grass or sand, you absorb healthful magnetic frequencies from the earth itself.  Our PEMF system (Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field therapy) delivers a controlled healthful frequency while you lie on a bed or sit on a chair.

The research is extensive on the healing power of these Biohacks.  Rather than attempting to define or describe each one here, I’ll invite you in for what I call “an Experience,” a “try it – feel it – know its beneficial power” hour-long odyssey which will “light you up” (pun intended) by improving circulation, reversing inflammation, and giving you a joyous and healthful endorphin rush).

TOPIC: STEM CELLS AND REGENERATIVE OPTIONS

 

QUESTION: Would you use  Stem Cell Therapy to help  reverse arthritic symptoms and suffering?

 

ANSWER: Yes, at times, under opportune conditions.  Whether you've explored the possibilities  or simply been intrigued by stem cell therapy, there's a great deal of buzz and unfortunately a great deal of misinformation,

Dr. Kristin Comella, my business partner and renowned stem cell scientist and researcher, has found stem cell injection and infusion valuable in cases of osteoarthritis and RA respectively.  Although much of this article addressed RA, we’ll discuss them separately as we consider the virtue of stem cell therapy.

As I explained earlier, Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition, thus, its source is systemic.  Dr. Comella would therefore suggest the first dose of stem cells intravenously.  As she explains, “it re-sets the immune system, in a sense, restoring factory settings to “before” the condition emerged.”

Because osteoarthritis is more localized, a joint injection is most likely to create a healing response, allowing the stem cells to create new structures and restore joint integrity.

There are times when RA creates severe limitation at a particular joint, that we might consider both, an IV and local injection.

None of this is cookie cutter, and rarely would a stem cell infusion be a preliminary step.  Optimally, we’ll invest time using exercise, nutrition, supplementation, and biohacks to create an optimal healing environment.  Lifestyle shifts are also carefully recommended to limit exposure to toxins and compounds that may aggravate any inflammatory conditions.

 

QUESTION: Do I Need an Injection?

 

ANSWER: Nobody "needs" an injection.  The best approach lies in proper assessment, the designing of a strategy and treatment plan, and professional guidance to ensure you have clarity as to the path forward.  It's usually best to begin with the least invasive strategies, assess markers over time to measure improvement, and as progress reveals itself (or fails to) make adjustments to create continuous movement toward health.

There may be times patients find it best to test the body's willingness to accept compounds that facilitate healing in injectable form, other times where its best to progress toward stem cell treatments.  Initial injections, if at all incorporated, may be blends of Hyaluronic Acid, peptides, and PRP.  This gradual time-tested approach allows the restoration of cellular growth and healing factors that might have been inhibited by toxins and inflammatory biochemicals.

Know that you are unique, your case is unique to you, and with that said, there are clues and similarities that allow us to recognize opportunities and modify treatment plans accordingly.

There are times we’ll incorporate all of the strategies I referenced, others we’ll hand pick those that best serve the patient.  The bottom line is, if you’re willing to believe your arthritic condition is reversible, we’ll provide you with the steps to prove yourself correct.
